What to Check After a Storm: Roof, Siding and Fence Damage
Hail, high winds and falling limbs can damage more than your roof. Here is what to look for after a North Alabama storm, and what to do next.
North Alabama gets its share of severe storms, hail and high winds. After the weather clears, a quick walk around your property can tell you whether you need a closer look.
Roof
Strong winds lift, curl or tear off shingles and loosen flashing. Once a roof edge or seal is broken, the next rain can get inside your home. Look for:
- Missing or lifted shingles
- Dents or bruising
- Granules in the gutters
- Water stains on ceilings
Some damage cannot be seen from the ground, so an inspection is the safest way to know. Please do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof yourself.
Siding
Wind can rip siding panels loose, and hail can crack them. Check the sides of the house that faced the storm for cracked, missing or loose pieces.
Wood Fences
Strong winds push over fences, and falling limbs can crush whole sections. Look for leaning or broken fence sections and loose posts.
What to Do Next
Call a licensed contractor and ask for a full inspection of the roof, siding, fence and interior. We inspect the affected areas and photograph every problem we find.
