Should You Replace or Repair Your Fence?
Replacement usually makes sense when:
- Most posts are rotted at the ground line
- The whole fence leans or has been repaired many times
- Boards are brittle across the entire run
- You want a different height or style
If most posts are still solid and the damage is limited to a section or some boards, fence repair is usually the better value.
What Fence Replacement Includes
- Removal of the old fence, posts and debris
- New posts set plumb and solid
- New rails and boards installed straight and evenly spaced
- New or rehung gates
- Cleanup and haul-away
Property Lines, Neighbors and HOA Rules
In Alabama, a fence that sits on a shared property line is generally the joint responsibility of both neighbors, so it helps to talk to the neighbor before work starts. A replacement should stay on the same line as the old fence unless a survey shows otherwise. Some cities and HOAs set rules on height, style and materials, and a full replacement may need approval even when a small repair does not. This is general information, not legal advice.
What Affects the Price
- Length and height of the fence
- Number of gates
- Soil conditions and access
- Removal and disposal of the old fence
- Staining or painting after installation
